Paxil and Paxil CR
Paxil is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paxil affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced.
Paxil is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Paxil CR is is a controlled-release SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). Paxil CR offers flexible dosing with three dosing strengths: 12.5 mg, 25 mg, and 37.5 mg.
Important --> It is well documented that Paxil (and other anti-depression medications) can contribute to increased thoughts of suicide and/or suicidal behavior, especially in children and young adults. For this reason, patients need to be well monitored, especially in the first couple weeks of treatment. Caregivers should be alert to changes in mood or symptoms. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.
Possible Side Effects Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Contact your doctor promptly if you have any of the following side effects, especially if they are new symptoms or if they get worse:
- mood changes,
- anxiety,
- panic attacks,
- trouble sleeping,
- irritability,
- agitation,
- aggressiveness,
- severe restlessness,
- mania (mental and/or physical hyperactivity),
- thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself.
Paxil and Pregnacy Paxil may cause heart defects or serious lung problems in newborn babies whose mothers take the medication during pregnancy. On the other hand, you risk having a relapse of depression if you stop taking your Paxil during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, or if you become pregnant while taking Paxil, do not stop taking the medication without first talking to your doctor.
Other Notes Before taking Paxil, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Paxil, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests.
